Murra Murra – Bendee Downs Ecological Assessment

Murra Murra and Bendee Downs are two adjoining properties situated 100km east of Cunnamulla in southwest Queensland. The properties cover 87,179 hectares (215,374 acres) and have been managed by the Kooma Traditional Owners Inc. since 2000.

Murra Murra and Bendee Downs lie within the Mulga lands bioregion and have rich cultural, landscape and biodiversity values. A key feature of both properties are wetlands, with over 100 individual lakes, swamps and gilgais, as well as the only permanent waterhole along Nebine Creek. Murra Murra and Bendee Downs is home to the Jamba Dhandan Duringala Nature Refuge, meaning “Place of Happy Frogs”.

BOOBOOK began its association with the Kooma people in 2002, when we were engaged to conduct a mammal survey on the properties. Since that survey, we have returned to Murra Murra and Bendee Downs on many occasions to participate in fauna and flora surveys, vegetation monitoring, staff training and key milestone events.

We are privileged to have undertaken work on Murra Murra and Bendee Downs and look forward to a continuing association with the Kooma Traditional Owners Inc. We remain committed to documenting and sharing knowledge of the outstanding biodiversity values of Murra Murra and Bendee Downs.

Key tasks we have been involved in at Murra Murra and Bendee Downs include:

  • fauna surveys and compilation of a vertebrate species inventory
  • opportunistic waterbird counts at key wetlands
  • flora surveys and compilation of a flora inventory
  • compilation of a document summarising the conservation and biodiversity values of the properties
  • implementation of a vegetation photo-monitoring program
  • assisted numerous researchers, bird watching groups and other visitors to the properties
  • documented locations of weeds and assisted with the preparation of a weed management plan
  • contributed information used in the development of property management plans and numerous funding submissions.
